Characterizing spoken responses in masked-onset priming of reading aloud using articulography

چکیده

A key method for studying articulatory planning at different levels of phonological organization is masked-onset priming. In previous work using that paradigm the dependent variable has been acoustic response time (RT). We used electromagnetic articulography to measure RTs and properties speech gestures in non-word production a priming experiment. Initiation articulation preceded onset by 199 ms, but lag varied up 63 depending on structure target. Onset affected latency, had no effect gestural duration, inter-gestural coordination, or velocity. This consistent with an account which computation from orthography abstract representation target initiated earlier primed than unprimed condition. discuss implications these findings models scope execution.

Reading aloud in Persian: ERP evidence for an early locus of the masked onset priming effect.

The current study investigates reading aloud words in Persian, a language that does not mark all its vowels in the script. Behaviorally, a masked onset priming effect (MOPE) was revealed for transparent words, with faster speech onset latencies in the phoneme-matching condition (i.e. phonological prime and target onset overlap; e.g. [symbol: see text] /sɒːl/; 'year' [symbol: see text] /sot/; 'v...

Phonological Encoding in Reading Aloud Persian: ERP Evidence for the Phonological Basis of the Masked Onset Priming Effect

The current study investigates reading aloud (i.e. pronouncing) words in Persian, a language that omits some of its vowels in its script. A word reading task employing a masked priming paradigm did not yield any differences in speech onset latencies between an onset-matching and an onset-mismatching condition. However, eventrelated potentials (ERPs) did reveal a difference in amplitude between ...

Masked primes activate feature representations in reading aloud.

Theories of reading aloud are silent about the role of subphonemic/subsegmental representations in translating print to sound. However, there is empirical evidence suggesting that feature representations are activated in speech production and visual word recognition. In the present study, we sought to determine whether masked primes activate feature representations in reading aloud using a vari...

Transposed-letter priming effects in reading aloud words and nonwords.

A masked nonword prime generated by transposing adjacent inner letters in a word (e.g., jugde) facilitates the recognition of the target word (JUDGE) more than a prime in which the relevant letters are replaced by different letters (e.g., junpe). This transposed-letter (TL) priming effect has been widely interpreted as evidence that the coding of letter position is flexible, rather than precise...
